Murcia Airport is a Spanish airport handling approximately 1.3 million passengers per year. It is therefore one of the smaller airports of this country, but is sill an important gateway for tourists coming to enjoy Spain’s magnificent coastline areas. The airport is found in San Javier, which is the reason for the airport’s second name, San Javier Airport, in the district of Santiago de la Ribera, around 17 miles from Murcia. Murcia Airport has rather few public bus services, therefore many arriving passengers rent a car, from one of the local or international car hire companies at the airport. A local company present is Solmar Car Hire, and passengers often choose Solmar for their competitive rental rates.
Murcia Airport’s car hire companies are mostly located in the arrivals hall of the airport, and also at the parking area just outside the terminal building, however, Solmar Car Hire is located further from the airport, and can be reached by shuttle bus. Car hire companies at off-airport sites usually provide their own complimentary shuttle bus service, which is available throughout their hours of business. The bus services are also usually equipped for disabled passengers, who travel in their wheelchairs. In regards to disabled passengers, hand controls at Murcia Airport may be available from Solmar. The device is most suitable for those with a lower limb deficiency, as it operates the brake and accelerator pedals of the vehicle, but not the car’s lights, blinkers, windshield wipers or other functions, such as cruise control. Hand controls are available on certain automatic vehicles, and should be reserved in advance.
Rentals that require special equipment should always be booked as early as possible, as well as vehicles of a special size or style. Advanced reservations can be made from Solmar’s website, at www.solmar.es. Online, customers will find all the information they need regarding Solmar’s car rental services at Murcia Airport, as well as the kinds of vehicles that are offered for hire. Customers may also arrange car seats for their children or a satellite navigation system from Solmar, and may have the option of a one way rental. A one way hire is when the vehicle is collected from one rental location, but is then returned to another, which can be in the same city or a different town or city. The rented car can be returned to another one of Solmar’s airport locations as well. However, although convenient for customers who will not be coming back to Murcia Airport, a one way hire returned to a different city may incur additional charges.
At the majority of the car hire companies found at Murcia Airport, the primary renter is required to be at least 21 years of age, and to have a valid drivers license. Most local drivers licenses issued in the European Union are accepted, but customers with a license written in a non-Roman alphabet should have an International Driving Permit as well. Although Solmar may not require a foreign renter to have an IDP, the document is required by Spanish Law and should therefore be arranged before departing for Murcia Airport. It is common practice for the majority of car hire companies to charge a higher rental rate for drivers under the age of 25, and certain categories containing larger or specialty type vehicles may also not be permitted for rental by younger drivers.
At Solmar Car Hire, Murcia Airport, customers will not hire a vehicle by its specific make and model, but rather by category. Customers will perhaps not receive the exact vehicle as shown as an example on Solmar’s website, but will receive a vehicle of very similar size and characteristics. If a customer does request a car by its specific make, Solmar will do their best to accommodate the customer, but cannot make any guarantees. Some of the vehicle categories available from Solmar include Compacts, Cars, Medium, State cars, Family cars, People Carriers and Automatics.
The largest vehicles from Solmar are found in the People Carrier category, and may be similar to the C4 Grand Picasso, Ford Galaxy, Peugeot Expert and Ford Transit Minbus. These vehicles seat between seven and nine passengers, and are the ideal choice for groups of travellers, or for families who require lots of space within their vehicle. However, Family cars are also available, such as the Citroen Picasso, VW Passat and Ford Mondeo SW, which is a station wagon with plenty of room for luggage. Other station wagons, or estate vehicles from Solmar include the Citroen Berlingo and Ford Focus SW.
Customers of Solmar who just need a vehicle for driving in the city, and who don’t need much room for luggage, can hire one of the company’s smaller cars, which include the Ford Ka, Ford Fiesta and the Ford Fusion. Smaller cars are often much lighter on fuel, and come with the most affordable rental rates. They are also easy to drive, and have features such as air conditioning and possibly power steering and air bags. When collecting your car from Murcia Airport, ensure that you know which type of fuel to use, and that you are comfortable with the workings of the vehicle before leaving the airport.
Solmar, at Murcia Airport, will be happy to assist you with all further enquiries.
